In this episode, of The VoiCEE podcast, Meenal Thakur, solutions journalism trainer at Transitions, speaks with Czech journalists Dominika Hromková and Michaela Endrstová, about a mentorship system in Velká Bíteš, a small Czech town, that helps newly appointed teachers learn on the job from older colleagues.

Their story “Kamarád na dva roky” (Friend for two years) on the issue won the 2022 Czech Journalism Award in the solution journalism category. The journalists explain how this system, which not only benefits the newly appointed teachers but is also an enriching experience for older colleagues, was set up and has successfully prevented new teachers from leaving their jobs due to a lack of support and guidance at work.

They also discuss solutions journalism, an approach to reporting that emphasises the potential of solutions to social issues, rather than just the problems. Looking at the complex and diverse media landscape of Central and Eastern Europe, they dig deeper into the opportunities and challenges of adopting solutions journalism in this region.

In this podcast series, we are looking at the region from different angles and perspectives, attempting to capture its diversity and understand emerging trends. Above all, we want to give a voice to a region that is often talked to rather than listened to.

The VoiCEE is brought to you by a network of independent English-language media in Central and Eastern Europe: Reporting Democracy, VSquare, New Eastern Europe, Notes from Poland, Kafkadesk, Insight Hungary, Internews Ukraine, Transitions, Ukraine World.
