Notes from Poland is looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated individual with relevant experience who is passionate about helping the world to understand Poland. You would be joining an independent media outlet run by a non-profit foundation with a small editorial team that works remotely.

Founded in 2019, we have established ourselves as the leading source of news and analysis about Poland in English and were named last year as one of Europe’s “media startups to watch” by the Financial Times’ Sifted news service.

The successful candidate will be employed under Polish law by the Notes from Poland Foundation and the position will entail working remotely for 20 hours a week, with the possibility of a flexible schedule to accommodate other employment. The start date and distribution of hours will be agreed upon between the successful candidate and the editor-in-chief.

Tasks and responsibilities

The successful candidate will be involved in managing the day-to-day activities of Notes from Poland in cooperation with the existing editorial team.

They will have a particular focus on overseeing “Insight” articles that offer deeper analysis and commentary on Polish current affairs, politics, history, culture, business and economics (notesfrompoland.com/category/insights/). This will involve:

  • Conceptualising and discussing ideas for such articles with the rest of the editorial team
  • Seeking and commissioning authors
  • Editing articles
  • Preparing articles for publication
  • Ensuring payment to authors

The successful candidate will also at times be involved in other tasks, including:

  • Monitoring, selecting and writing news stories (notesfrompoland.com/category/news/)
  • Editing news stories written by other members of the team
  • Administration and organisational work

The position requires a particular focus on fact-checking and reporting accurately, objectively and comprehensively, as well as adherence to our philosophy of presenting a broad and diverse range of perspectives.

Language requirements

The ideal candidate will be a native speaker of English. However, we will also consider applications from candidates with a very high but not native level of English.

Candidates must also be able to demonstrate a good understanding of Polish.

Experience and skills

Candidates will have experience in editing/commissioning/curating content, including working with texts in English. Knowledge of Polish culture, politics and society is essential.

Notes from Poland is an online publication. Hence, candidates should possess a high level of understanding of online and social media. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), particularly WordPress, and any other IT skills are an advantage.
